Mostly Maybelline | Mini Drugstore Haul

There has been a few products on the Blogosphere lately that have caught my eye, so while I was in my local Priceline store the other day I decided to have a closer gander. Of course this unleashed the dragon and I walked out with all of the products. Cannot be trusted to 'just look' anymore. This happened...

Left to right: Maybelline Fit Me! Foundation in 115, Maybelline Illegal Length Mascara in Blackest Black, L'Oreal Colour Infallible Eyeshadow in Hourglass Beige.
Front: Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer in 02.

As the title of this blog post would suggest, I left the store with mostly Maybelline products. It's only been a few days, so I can't really comment or give a proper review on any of these, but I can say that the foundation and the concelaer are making my makeup life so much more exciting! I'm sure they will feature in some of my upcoming videos *wink wink.

Here is a look I created with ALL of my new lovely things, plus a couple of others I've been playing with lately.

Made myself unintentionally look like someone from the cast of Grease with that headband!

The Terrible Time When You Buy Something Bad | M.A.C Glamour Daze Fuidline

Last week I was doing some last minute Christmas shopping and went to M.A.C to check out their new limited edition Extra Dimension Skinfinishes. Unfortunately, they were all sold out. So in a frenzy, I tried a couple of the limited edition Fluidline's on my wrist and decided I liked two of them. I hurriedly bought them and exited M.A.C before I could feel 'impulse shopper's guilt'.

From the Glamour Daze collection

Left: Little Black Bow | Right: Feminine Edge

Little Black Bow is a light grey/brown colour with silver glitter running through it, while Feminine Edge is a pale pink with silver and pink glitter running through it. They are both the standard, smooth consistency of the normal Fluidline products, except for the glitter of course. Maybe just a fraction creamier.

Left: Little Black Bow | Right: Feminine Edge

As you can see, the colours look beautiful and shimmery in the light. So when I tried them on quickly at the store, I was quite excited. Unfortunately when I got home I realised that the glitter particles in the Fluidlines is actually really chunky. I applied them like a gel liner to my upper lid and the dark colour came out beautifully, but the pink looked barely there.

I've worn Little Black Bow twice now, just along my upper lash line and both times the glitter has ended up all over my face, on my lashes and sometimes if I'm really lucky, in my eye! I'm going to keep playing with these because I'm determined to find a way to wear them and I don't want to write them off as just being a plain bad product yet. I will update on these when I find answers!

Have you ever bought a product that was just plain bad? Comment below and we can share some tricks about how to make the most of our impulse buys :)

Lana Del Rey Makeup Tutorial

A couple of weeks ago I uploaded my new YouTube tutorial, but I completely forgot to mention it on here! How rude! I noticed a beautiful cover of Vogue Australia with Lana Del Rey on the front and I instantly fell in love. I tested my skills out and here's the result.

Let's compare!

Original - Vogue Australia October 2012

My version

And some other views, just incase you're curious. I even put a flower in my hair and braided it, Lana style! My wispy eyelashes were my favourite part of creating this look.

And now for the actual video tutorial! Please watch and be sure to take a gander (and subscribe) to my YouTube channel.

For the Sake of Sensitive Eyes, let's get LIPPY! MAC & Poppy King

It is the brunt of Spring in Australia and sadly, my eyes do not like it. I am allergic to loads of things anyway, but pollen seems to affect me the most. So thanks to my itchy eyes, I was able to justify spending my hard earned cash on some new lip products!

From left: Lipstick Queen Chinatown Glossy Pencil - Thriller,
MAC - Vegas Volt & MAC - Rebel

No makeup on the eyes means I can go absolutely nuts with lips. So naturally I went nuts at MAC first. The shade in the middle (Vegas Volt) had been on my mind because a girl who works for MAC had popped into my work with it on, and MAN it made an impression! Then, in an attempt to find a hot blackberry colour, I picked up Rebel (right) and frantically tried it on after a quick try on the back of my hand. Perfect dark pout!

The Lipstick Queen Chinatown Glossy Pencil (the one that looks like a crayon) was the most exciting to me because I had learnt a few weeks earlier that the creator of this new brand was none other than Poppy King. For those of you that are not familiar, Poppy King is an Australian who started her own cosmetic brand at quite an early age. She became very successful but unfortunately her company went bust about a decade ago. So here is her comeback! My mum and I were so excited to hear this, and the products happen to be magic. Go Aussie! The pencil is more like a gloss then a lipstick, but I love that I can layer it on without worrying about the colour going all over my teeth! The shade is called Thriller and makes me dance like a zombie every time I wear it :)

Here is my arm with some swatches of my new babies.

From top: Thriller, Vegas Volt & Rebel

Poppy's new range is available in Australia at Kit Cosmetics stores, or if you fancy you can shop the range online here

Pucker those lips ladies and let me know what colours you've been loving down below.

Massive MUA Haul

After telling my work collegues that I would not spend anymore money on makeup for the month, I crumbled.  I crumbled hard...

Oh dear! Looking at it here still makes me frightened! Luckily these products turned out to be cheap as chips. MUA Makeup Academy is a brand from the UK that pride themselves on creating effective, good quality cosmetics at very affordable prices. They have recently extended there range with some professional palettes and other bits and bobs, but nothing excedes the price of 4 pounds! So you can see, I really HAD to purchase some things to test them out. I NEEDED too... see how I try and justify it?

12 Shade Undressed Palette £4

12 Shade Poptastic Palette £4

These palettes were dangerous for me because I wanted all of them. I finally settled of these two. Reason being, one is nutral and great for everyday, but I still get my extreme colour fix with the other one. Let the experiments begin! I'm loving the bright pink colour in the Poptastic palette. It's mental!

Because I purchased two palettes, I was eligible to get this one below for free. Yes please! Thanks MUA!

 24 Shade Immaculate Collection Palette

As you can see from my swatches, the pigment of the eyeshadows is quite incredible. When I saw the price, I thought that if I only got one great colour from the palettes it would still be a bargain. Turns out that I am quite impressed so far. There is also a good mixture of matte and shimmery colours in ALL of the palettes, which is lovely and they are all very easily blended and workable.

Swatches from the Poptastic Palette

I also purchased this separate eyeshadow below beacause the colour looked really pretty. It has a beautiful texture and is really buildable especially when I use it over my MAC paint pots. It also looks fantastic over my Maybelline Colour Tattoo in Pomegranate Punk. The colour just pops like crazy!

 Pearl Eyeshadow Shade 25 £1

Onto some important eyebrow products now. Firstly, I got an eyebrow pencil (not pictured) from the brand because the latest one that I bought from Rimmel London was ridiculously light for me. I'm not a huge fan of eyebrow pencils and like to use the powders much more, but I couldn't really go wrong when it was £1! It has a neat little comb on the end too, which is handy for travel I guess. I also got a brow kit from MUA. It has two brow colours, a brow-bone highlight colour, a setting gel, tweezers and a double-sided angled brush. I'm very impressed with this kit, although I use a different brush with it that holds the powder a little better than the one provided. Also, very sad about this because this one is so SO cheap and I recently just bought a similar one from Benefit which turned out to be incredibly expensive. Not cool!

Brow Kit £3

For my cheeks I purchased this mosaic blusher. It's pretty but it is very light. I think this will look much nicer on tanned skin for the summer.

Mosaic Blusher English Rose £2.50

And last but not least, some lip products. I got this really cute lip balm which has loads of product in it and a lovely pink tint. It feels nice on the lips and looks super cool, like one of those Valentine's Day sweets. It's hard to lose in my handbag because it's so big too!

Love Heart Lip Balm-Hot Lips £2

And I could not help myself, so I bought more lippys! For £1 each, you can't really say no (justified haha). I bought a pink and red one. They feel moisturising on your lips and are so pigmented it seems like a joke that they are so cheap.

Lipstick Shade 6 (left) & Shade 13 £1

I'm so impressed with this brand and frankly, I'm glad I broke my spending ban promise. These products are wicked and to all you readers from overseas, just know how lucky you are to have such easy access to cheap cosmetics because in Australia it's not so.

Hope you enjoyed reading about my cheap little finds. I will be sure to use some of these products in my upcoming video tutorials.

Now. I'm. STRONGER

For my second makeup tutorial video, I decided to film a request. I had been asked to video the makeup from Britney Spears' 'Stronger' video clip. After doing a bit of research, I learnt that this was a very dramitic smokey eye, using silver and navy blue shadows. So even though the video clip is quite old, this eye makeup seems pretty relelvent to today because these colours are very on trend at the moment.

Here is a picture of Miss Spears sporting the look in her video

And here is my interpretation

After I filmed this video, I realised that I used a truck load of Rimmel London products. So if your in the market for some cheap makeup, this video might give you some nifty ideas. See how I created this look below...

I really hope you guys like this one. Please send some more requests and thanks for reading (slash) watching!

Fight for Fair Beauty

One of the major issues I have about living in Australia is the fact that everything is so expensive here. Unfortunately, I never realised just how expensive until I travelled overseas and actually saw it with my own eyes! Makeup is terribly pricey here and it's really sad! We don't have access to many brands because we are so far away and for the brands that are lucky enough to enter our shores, the fate of their pricing can go from reasonable to extravagant with the click of a finger.

Let's face it, this is really not fair! Why should we Australians pay more for cosmetics? It's frustrating to read beauty blogs based in the UK and America because when they say something is a little bit pricey, you know it's going to be ridiculously unaffordable in Australia before you even have time to type it into Google.

Thankfully, someone has decided to stand up for us poor Aussies! Illamasqua, who is an independent UK based brand, has recognised the issue and is running a campaign to "fight for a fair beauty price". To get involved click here and sign the petition. By signing, you are voicing your frustration over inflated cosmetic prices in Australia, and making a pledge that if the 'head-boss-guys' at Illamasqua slash their prices, you will buy buy buy!

To celebrate my delight at Illamasqua's decision to run this campaign, I had a little bit of a play with a new look on the weekend with some of their products. They have beautiful products and loads of outrageous colours. Have a lookie!

Thanks for reading and please sign the pledge!

Lip Product Lust

On account of it being winter in Australia, my skin has been changing and freaking out like Miley Cyrus at the hairdresser. My lips, in particular, have been suffering the wrath of the cold weather and have decided to reward me with uncomfortable 'razor blade' lips instead. Luckily, I have enough lip products to solve my dilemma and have even purchased some more to soothe my irritated lips (and my soul). There have been three lip colours in particular that I have been wearing here, there and everywhere!

I've recently purchased two lovely lipcolours, which are quickly becoming favs. These are from Yves Saint Laurent and are Rouge Volupte lipsticks with SPF 15. They have insane colour payoff, but also feel smooth and moisturising. You barely have to touch them to your lips to get an intense colour!

The first is an amazing orange colour, which is becoming quite a trend with me. Orange everywhere!

YSL - Rouge Volupte (Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick SPF 15) #15 Extreme Coral

The second one is a bright BRIGHT pink colour, which I will also be rocking out in Summer FOR SURE!

YSL - Rouge Volupte (Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick SPF 15) #11 Rose Culte

The third one I have had for AGES but have recently rediscovered it rolling around in my makeup collection. It is from the MAC Viva Glam range and is inspired by none other than Lady Gaga! Here I am pulling my best 'mother monster' pose.

MAC - Viva Glam Gaga

I would love to know what colours and products you have provided your pouty pair with recently, because sharing is caring and my soul may need soothing again very soon with a sneaky purchase or two!

What to choose? hmmmmm...

YouTube Channel Launch

One bright Friday afternoon, I mustered up some courage and decided to make my bedroom look like this.

It was time to film my first makeup tutorial for my new YouTube channel. So while I may have been M.I.A from this blog, I can assure you I have been working hard filming, editing and just generally swearing at technology in an attempt to get this experiment of mine underway.

So hear it goes. My first tutorial. Please watch and subscribe. I understand that the quality (and my jokes) are not that great, but I promise everything will get better in time :)

ALSO! Here is just an awkward introductory video which I was playing around with in iMovie

Thanks for watching x

Cheap Curiosity

I know I'm only new to the blogosphere, but I have been reading beauty blogs for a very VERY long time. Something that seems to always captivate the beauty world is the idea of drug-store makeup brands stepping up and providing quality makeup products that are just as good as the high-end brands. I have to confess, I have become somewhat of a foundation snob, but this is only because of my own self inflicted obsession with constant trial and error. Usually my trials on drug-store foundations, have ended in error. Buh boww!

But recently, I have noticed that two drug-store foundations have set the internet into a spin. Curiosity finally killed the cat, as they say, so I purchased them and am somewhat surprised at the results.

IN THE RED CORNER....

Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation

I had only heard great reviews about this and was keen to see if it lived up to the hype. The bottle is pretty cool looking and it's glass, so it feels more expensive in my hand. I hope that doesn't sound silly! The consistency is quite lightweight, but surprisingly it gives medium coverage which is very easy to build. It has illuminating particles through it, but these just add to giving your skin a healthy glow. I was concerned that these would make me sparkly "Edward Cullen" style, but they are barely noticeable. I bought the shade True Ivory and used about two pumps on my face with a flat foundation brush. Two pumps sounds like a lot of product, but for the low price of $19.95 I couldn't care less!

IN THE BLUE CORNER....

Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation

I had seen mixed reviews about this foundation, but when I smelt the product I was in love. It has a very fruity smell that is so SO good! On the bottle it says that is has apricot, melon, apple and ginger in it. So it makes sense that is smells lov-er-ly! This foundation is a little bit thicker in consistency than the Rimmel one, but surprisingly it only gives a fairly light coverage. It's really beautiful for everyday wear and is quite long lasting. It doesn't feel heavy on the skin, even though it's thick either. I used about a pump and a half with a flat foundation brush to start with, but I prefer to use this with my fingers just because it helps to melt the product a little better onto the face. I bought the shade Light Beige. THE SMELL! It was a little pricier than Rimmel, at $25.60, but still bang for your buck!

If I had to choose, I would say I've been enjoying the Rimmel foundation the most. But these are both definitely worth the buzz they have created.

Lesson learnt! Don't be a foundation snob!

Nude & Black Eye

So I promised last time I would post some looks that I created with my new products from my StrawberryNet post which you can find HERE. I finally decided on a look I loved and here it is! Sorry about my shiny nose in some pictures, the lighting was giving me grief :(

The main product that influenced me to go for a nude colour on the lid was my new Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer. I was reading the packaging and I noticed it said to wear underneath eye colour or on it's own. As you can see, the primer is slightly tinted and gives off a natural/bronzy colour when blended into the lid. I love this by itself! It just looks really natural and clean and it takes seconds to blend in. AND it's pretty amazing underneath an eyeshadow too. After a week of use, I can report, NO creasing here.

After applying the primer, I added a little black shadow into the eye socket and under the lower lash line. I blended this out furiously to make it nice and subtle and winged it upwards and out to lift the eyes. I used my new MAC Eye Kohl in Facinating in the waterline. I love how lighter colours in the waterline can make your eyes look bigger. Been using this pencil a lot this week! I also curled my lashes with my new Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler before I applied mascara. It's so easy to use and definitely makes a dramatic impact.

On my cheeks, I used one of my new NARS Blushers in the colour Sin. It looks quite pink in the photo on the left, but it's more of a plum-pink in the palette. It is SO pigmented and has a really soft gold shimmer through it. This will look beautiful in summer, I can't wait!

So all in all I'm pretty happy with my purchases! I wanted to wait a week to post this so I was definitely sure they worked for me. I hope you like my nude look and I cant wait to start filming these for you! It's really hard to explain how to do it in writing. Let me know what you think and if you have bought any new products that I need to know about too.

StrawberryNET haul came!

In a twist of fate this morning, I managed to wake up and get dressed precisely five minutes before my doorbell rang. The happy little post lady gave me the box and I literally shuddered with excitement...which is pretty sad. The only other thing in life that makes me this happy is ballet. I understand that this is also another sad piece of information.

If you've never heard of StrawberryNET before, here's the lowdown. It's basically a discount website for all things cosmetics. It has many wicked brands, however it only stocks SOME products, not all. If you're like me and check the site daily, you can pick up some good stuff. They even send you free gifts and give you extra discounts depending on how many items you purchase. AND free shipping world-wide!

So after a lot of ohhhh and ahhhhhh here's what I got...

From left: Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, NARS Blush in Deep Throat, NARS Blush in Sin, Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer, MAC Eye Kohl in Fascinating, NARS Eyeliner Pencil in Mambo, Calvin Klein Delicious Light Glistening Lip Gloss in Pearly Peach*, MAC Lip Glass in Russian Red

 *I got this for free

I'm so excited to try this out! I was going to post a look with some of the colours, but my skin is looking absolutely mental at the moment. Will get it up in the next week, I promise, along with some swatches too. Please let me know what you think of StrawberryNET, or if there are any other sites that you use to buy cosmetics.

Until next time x

And we're off and racing...

Hello inter webs! My name is Kristen and I love to learn. I mostly love to learn about all things makeup and cosmetics. I have been working around cosmetics for about five years now, but I am no professional. I pick up new tips and tricks everyday! I wanted to create THIS space (right here) to learn some more, and hopefully share some things with you guys. So feel free to teach me things and comment!!

RANDOM FACT. Did you know that some eyeshadow and blush colours are made using crushed up beetles and bugs?? I learnt this the other day and it absolutely freaked my freak! Not really sure how I feel about that to be honest.

To get me off and racing, I thought I'd share some recent purchases of mine that have also been freaking my freak...

First off...

THEY'RE REAL MASCARA by BENEFIT

This is my favourite mascara at the moment and it has been a real headache trying to find one that doesn't crack onto my cheeks. The brush on this is super cool because it's almost like a tiny ball at the end. You can really get into those fine lashes. It lengthens and makes my lashes the blackest black..
AND NO CRACKING!
It was a fairly pricey mascara, coming in at $38, but it is worth the price tag in this case. Very impressive!

CREAM BLUSH from ILLAMASQUA

A few weeks ago, I visited an Illamasqua counter and thanks to the lovely sales assistant there, I now have a crush on cream blushes. I don't really like to powder my skin that much, and this leaves an amazing dewy finish on my cheekbones that I really love. The colours I have are Promise (left) which is a candy pink and Libido (right) a beautiful bright orange. These are easy to apply with the swipe of a finger and can be used as a lip tint too. These come in a $42, but have really opened my world to cream blush..
Well I guess I'll leave it there for today. Sorry for the dodgy photography skills here, I hope to get better one day. I should be receiving a lovely package from StrawberryNet very shortly, so I will be back to update on that. Happy reading blogosphere x
